What Is BTS and BTS ARMY?

Indian BTS ARMY Buzz Indian BTS ARMY BUZZ BEGINS. The group's name, BTS, stands for the Korean phrase "Bang tan boys" (Korean: 방탄소년단; Hanja: 防彈少年團), literally meaning "Bulletproof Boy Scouts". According to member J-Hope, the name signifies the group's desire "to block out stereotypes, criticisms, and expectations that aim on adolescents like bullets". In July 2017, BTS announced that their name would also stand for "Beyond the Scene" as part of their new brand identity. This extended their name to mean "growing youth BTS who is going beyond the realities they are facing, and going forward".

BTS was formed in 2010, after Big Hit Entertainment CEO Bang Si-hyuk met RM and was impressed by his rapping skills.[7] RM (Kim Namjoon) was an underground rapper who was well known on the music scene in Seoul.[8] BTS was originally supposed to be a hip hop group similar to YG Entertainment's 1TYM.[9] Soon after BTS was created, Bang Si-hyuk decided instead to create an idol group similar to Seo Taiji and Boys, who were popular in the 1990s. However, unlike that group's music, BTS' songs were less socially conscious, given the strict regulation of K-pop bands at the time of the group's formation.[10] The change in plan was because album sales were suffering across the music industry, and Bang deemed an idol group more marketable.[11] Originally slated to debut in 2011, the group featured on several tracks by artists like 2AM and Lee Seung-gi before that debut was postponed. They were reorganized into a more traditional idol group.[12] Six months prior to their rescheduled 2013 debut, they began to gain attention for their presence on various social media websites, as well for as song covers on YouTube and SoundCloud.[13][14] Prior to their debut before a small crowd of industry insiders in 2013, the band members lived together, practicing up to 15 hours a day.[15]

BTS' representation by Big Hit, rather than one of the three agencies that dominated K-pop at the time, allowed the group members leeway to express their individuality and allowed them to have input into the music.[17] On June 12, 2013, BTS released their debut single album 2 Cool 4 Skool (the first entry in their "school trilogy" series), along with the lead single "No More Dream", which quickly fell off the charts.[18][19][20] Nevertheless, according to Kathy Sprinkel in her book on BTS, that single was "spotlighting young people's anxiety in the face of lofty parental expectations, sent shock waves through the K-pop ranks. Here was a musical act that wasn't pulling any punches. More specifically, they had a point of view, and they weren't afraid to take on topics that are considered taboo in South Korean society and elsewhere."[21] The album reached the top five on South Korea's Gaon Music Chart.[22] Their subsequent single, "We Are Bulletproof Pt. 2", failed to chart. In 2 Cool 4 Skool, BTS employed an old-school hip-hop sound from the 1980s–90s.[23] The single album's release was followed by several appearances on Korean music shows.[24][25] Despite being unpolished, critics state that these early live performances demonstrated BTS' potential.[24] "No More Dream" was then re-recorded in Japanese and released in June 2014.[26]
